How estimates work
Last updated August 2026
MyTemple combines your logged data, published nutrition and exercise references, and product guardrails to produce calorie, macro, and coaching outputs. This page explains what each number means and where it comes from.

Your data vs AI estimates
- Logged data — food you enter, weigh-ins, workouts, and imported Apple Health / Withings readings drive trends, adherence signals, and personalised coaching.
- AI estimates — meal photo/text analysis infers portions and nutrients. Treat these as approximations; confirm values that matter to you.
- App guardrails — floors, ceilings, and pace caps are conservative product limits, not clinical prescriptions.
Calculation methods
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
Estimated from sex, age, height, and weight using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation when body composition is unavailable; composition-adjusted variants when logged.
- Mifflin–St Jeor resting energy expenditure equation — American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Activity & workout calories
MET values from the 2024 Compendium applied to duration and body weight; steps and imported workouts contribute to daily activity totals.
- 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities — Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise
- Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans — U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Protein minimum
App guardrail of about 1.6 g/kg body weight, informed by resistance-training protein research; your target may be higher based on goals.
- Protein intake and muscle mass/strength meta-analysis — British Journal of Sports Medicine
Nutrient targets and healthy ranges
Vitamins and minerals use NIH Dietary Reference Intakes by age and sex, with modest activity adjustments (iron, potassium) and energy-scaled B vitamins and fibre. Saturated fat and free sugar follow WHO guidance of under 10% of energy. The green window on each bar is the adequate range; red is at or above a tolerable upper intake or a limit. Not a clinical prescription.
- Dietary Reference Intakes — National Academies / NIH Office of Dietary Supplements
- Healthy diet (WHO fact sheet) — World Health Organization
- Protein intake and muscle mass/strength meta-analysis — British Journal of Sports Medicine
Weight-change pace
Weekly rate capped at about 1% of body weight — an app guardrail to keep deficits/surpluses conservative during training.

Calorie safety floor
Minimum daily calories derived from BMR and sex-specific app guardrails — not a clinical prescription.
- How MyTemple estimates work — MyTemple
Meal photo / text analysis
AI estimates portion size and nutrients from your description or photo. Values are estimates — verify before relying on them for medical decisions.
- How MyTemple estimates work — MyTemple
Weight trend
Smoothed trend computed from your logged weigh-ins — based on your data, not population norms.
Learned maintenance
Back-solved from your intake and weight trend after removing training energy — based on your logged data.

Known limits & when to consult a clinician
- Portion and nutrient estimates from photos can be wrong — especially mixed dishes.
- BMR and activity equations describe population averages; your metabolism may differ.
- Recovery signals depend on connected devices; missing sleep or heart data limits readiness guidance.
- MyTemple does not diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, or replace a doctor, dietitian, or physiotherapist. Seek professional advice before changing medication, diet, or training for medical reasons.
